Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer Looks Magic | Clothes on Film

Love them or loathe them, every couple of years a new Harry Potter movie ambles along, its young cast gradually coming to resemble the most clean living group of teenagers ever to grace the screen. However all that fun is set to end with the release of final film in the series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in two parts (2010, 2011), and here, at last, is the trailer. Verdict? If you like Potter, you are going to like this. Cannot say fairer than that.

Just as directors of the now seven strong collection have been varied, so too have costume designers. Probably the most important, particularly in relation to giving the films a significant portion of their visual personality, was Judianna Makovsky. Also known for her work on both National Treasure pics, Makovsky is typically recognised for contemporary costume design. She combined this genre effortlessly with fantasy on Potter no.1, the Philosopher’s Stone (2001).

Next up was Lindy Hemming for sequel the Chamber of Secrets (2002), famously the costumer behind Pierce Brosnan’s Brioni tenure as James Bond. Her stint on Harry Potter was notable as costumes became ever so slightly grander, further embracing the magical fantasy element.

Jany Temime has been costume designer for the last five Harry Potter movies. If she did not create the guise or immediately evolve it, she is definitely responsible for the prepubescent and teen styles sported by Daniel Radcliffe’s permanently bespectacled Harry and his Gap-alike young friends (and foes).

Which brings us to the Deathly Hallows and its tense new trailer. Director David Yates (Parts 1 and 2) is keeping things dark and dramatic, incorporating drawn-out wide shots and a foreboding, almost gloomy atmosphere. Some of the costumes already look to be standouts, namely Emma Watson’s striped Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday style coat and fetching red evening dress. Yet Termine keeps things accessibly ordinary. These are adolescents with extraordinary gifts, but still adolescents all the same.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will be released in November 2010 and Part 2 in July 2011. If you have ever read the book, you will realise that this actually a pretty shrewd idea.
