Oz the Great and Powerful: Close Up Look at the Costumes

Notably since London Fashion Week (15th – 19th February), Disney has extensively promoted costumes from Oz the Great and Powerful. During Fashion Week, William Tempest and Deniz Berdan ‘inspired by’ dresses were featured along with Nicholas Kirkwood shoes made in conjunction with Selfridges. Since 28th February, four costumes from Oz have been on display at Selfridges’ flagship store in London: a dark grey period suit worn by James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a green sequin dress worn by Rachel Weisz as Evanora, a white tulle dress worn by Michelle Williams as Glinda, and the Wicked Witch costume worn by… well, go see the movie. All costumes in Oz the Great…

Trailer for Amelia Touches Down: Radical fashions of 1920s-30s

Judging by this trailer for Amelia, Mira Nair’s dramatisation of female aviator Amelia Earhart’s extraordinary life starring Hilary Swank, vintage fashion fans are in for a serious treat. The costumes look accurate and, most important of all, not overdone. Amelia Earhart was known for her practical and modernistic sense of style throughout the 1920s – early 1930s. Yet she still retained femininity by reappropriating rather than flat out rejecting trends of the time. She was a radical, not a revolutionist. In addition to the ubiquitous leather flying jacket and fur-topped leather trench, expect (deep breath) dropped waist just-below-the-knee dresses with relaxed bodices, short hair, short pants, day slacks, jodhpurs, plain…

All the Catching Fire Fashion Portraits in One Place

Drip-fed over several days, these costume glimpses will likely cause some major appetite whetting. Remember however, The Hunger Games’ sequel Catching Fire does not even hit cinemas until November. Long wait. Catching Fire costume designer is Trish Summerville, who after winning a Contemporary Costume Designer’s Guild award for her fashionable work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2012 is a hot name right now. Summerville replaces The Hunger Games’ costume designer Judianna Makovsky, a two time CDG recipient this year, who laid the franchise groundwork with some enjoyable nods to wacky runway trends. Available via Lionsgate’s ‘Capitol Couture’ tumblr, these portraits lack context so obviously do not reveal…

    Review: Skyfall

Starring: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem Directed By: Sam Mendes SPOILER FREE James Bond thunders back to our screens in what feels like a reboot of the 50 year old franchise with the same actor. This is not the 007 who calmly waits for a man to bleed to death before stealing his Harrington; the brutal cold bastard of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace has mellowed considerably and can even manage a quip or two. Whether this development will delight or disappoint is a matter of personal taste. One thing is certain however; Bond has never scrubbed up better. Tom Ford now exists to make Daniel Craig suits.…

Five Cool Movie Sunglasses for the Weekend

Because the sun is out making us all feel like we’re in Cannes (probably not by the time you read this), and because it’s the weekend, let’s have a look at some of the coolest movie sunglasses money can buy. Of course there are hundreds of memorable movie sunglasses, so no list written will ever be enough – or no list written today will be enough anyway. These, however, should get the ball rolling. Iconic, purposeful, and above all, cool, here are five filmic shades to beat the Riviera rays. Boardwalk Empire: Cometh the Dandiest Man

There is a man on Boardwalk Empire with even more sartorial presence than Steve Buscemi’s saffron silk gangster Nucky Thompson. Whereas Nucky may stop at red plaid suit and homburg, this man will brave a red topcoat with fur collar and leather buttons, red plaid suit and a bow-tie; he is the man to teach us all that colour and pattern are not only masculine, but the most masculine. He is Chalky White. Known to many for his career defining turn as Omar on The Wire, in Boardwalk Empire, Michael Kenneth Williams plays a gangster even shrewder and perhaps even more capable. Certainly he is better dressed. Williams’ prohibition era…

Inception: Jeffrey Kurland – Follow Up Costume Q&A

Everyone who wishes to has seen and digested Inception by now, and still the most popular topic of discussion is Jeffrey Kurland’s inspiring costumes. Introducing costume design to cinemagoers who perhaps never would have noticed the craft before, Jeffrey has truly broken down barriers with Inception. Very kindly, he has taken time out of his busy schedule to once again speak exclusively to Clothes on Film about his intended meaning behind the costumes, plus some further details about the outfits themselves.
