The Tourist Trailer Hits: Continental Couture | Clothes on Film

The first trailer for The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp has finally debuted. Regardless of your sexual orientation, there is something for you here.

Yet, although it may look gorgeous there is a slight concern that The Tourist is attempting that most troublesome of genres – the comedy thriller. Clearly the premise is a sixties throwback, with Johnny Depp as the unaware tourist of the title entranced by a ‘ravenous’ (watch the trailer) femme fatale played by Angelina Jolie. Thankfully, however, their clothes are not heavy-handedly retro, with costume designer Coleen Atwood instead choosing chic modern couture that exudes unattainable class.

Towards the end of the trailer the tone becomes darker, though it is clear the emphasis is on fun more than weighty spy drama, especially with those eyebrow raising transatlantic accents. Jolie appears to be wearing a capsule wardrobe of elegant silk dresses and antique jewellery, while Johnny Depp is ruffled Euro-cool in white tuxedo, striped PJs and a less than flattering INXS hairstyle.

By the looks of things these two are not Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, but, of course, it is impossible to judge chemistry from a two minute hodgepodge. Thing is, they both scream handsome and that was at least fifty percent of the appeal of The Tourist from the get-go. The remaining fifty comes from Timothy Dalton co-starring, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck directing (The Lives of Others), plus Julian Fellowes and Christopher McQuarrie on scripting duties.

Be assured that when The Tourist hits cinemas on 10th December we will be bombarding Colleen Atwood with enthusiastic questions. Jolie’s mocha coloured wrap looks worthy of an article alone.
