CDG Award Nominations Are In: Hmm… | http://clothesonfilm.net – Part 29150
Finally the Costume Designers Guild (CDG) nominations have been announced, and while they right some of the wrongs made by Oscar and chiefly BAFTA, ample opportunity to reward some really creative and effective costume design has once again been overlooked.
We have indicated at length our views on the Academy and BAFTA’s nominations (HERE and HERE) so in the interests of not sounding like a broken record we shall stick to the facts. Well, perhaps just the odd observation… Nominations below:
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Beasts of the Southern Wild – Stephani Lewis
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Louise Stjernsward
Silver Linings Playbook – Mark Bridges
Skyfall – Jany Temime
Zero Dark Thirty – George L. Little
(Sorry, but at least one of these choices is just plain bizarre. Thumbs up for Zero Dark Thirty though)
Excellence in Period Film
Anna Karenina – Jacqueline Durran
Argo – Jacqueline West
Les Misérables – Paco Delgado
Lincoln – Joanna Johnston
Moonrise Kingdom – Kasia Walicka-Maimone
(Good call: Moonrise Kingdom and Argo get nods. Who exactly did Sharen Davis upset however?)
Sorry Sharen Davis. No nomination is utter, utter madness. Nothing for Looper either.
Excellence in Fantasy Film
Cloud Atlas – Kym Barrett, Pierre-Yves Gayraud
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Ann Maskrey, Richard Taylor, Bob Buck
The Hunger Games – Judianna Makovsky
Mirror Mirror – Eiko Ishioka
Snow White and the Huntsman – Colleen Atwood
(Excellent to see Cloud Atlas, The Hobbit and The Hunger Games finally get some recognition)
Outstanding Contemporary Television Series
Girls – Jennifer Rogien
Nashville – Susie DeSanto
Revenge – Jill Ohanneson
Smash – Molly Maginnis
Treme – Alonzo Wilson, Costume Designer. Ann Walters, co-Costume Designer
(Cannot really comment having only seen a couple of these. Girls catches our eye though)
Outstanding Period/ Fantasy Television Series
Boardwalk Empire – John Dunn, Lisa Padovani
Downton Abbey – Caroline McCall
Game of Thrones – Michele Clapton
(All three are superb choices)
Considering Downton Abbey’s popularity in the U.S, we would put our money on Caroline McCall.
Outstanding Made For Television or Mini-Series
American Horror Story: Asylum, Season 2 – Lou Eyrich
Hatfields & McCoys – Karri Hutchinson
Hemingway & Gellhorn – Ruth Myers
(Again, having only seen Hatfields & McCoys we have no right to comment)
Excellence in Commercial Costume Design
Capital One: Couture – Roseanne Fiedler
Captain Morgan Black – Judianna Makovsky
Dos Equis: Most Interesting Man in the World – Julie Vogel
(Probably one for those who do not live in the UK.)
Where is Lawless? Where is Django Unchained? Where is The Dark Knight Rises? Where is Prometheus? Goodness only knows. We are betting one film in particular sweeps the big three award ceremonies this year. Column inches count for a lot in this business.
Nonetheless it is pleasing to see that Judianna Makovsky is being given an Outstanding Contribution to Film award (and Eduardo Castro for TV). Anne Hathaway too will add justifiable glamour collecting her LACOSTE Spotlight. So well done to all the nominees and recipients; to be fair there is not a bad name among the bunch. CDG though, you missed a trick this year.
The 15th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards take place on 19th February in Los Angeles.
