Charlie Sheen Back in Braces for Wall Street 2 | Clothes on Film
In an interview with The New York Times, director Oliver Stone has confirmed Charlie Sheen is to return as disgraced trader Bud Fox for Wall Street sequel Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (sounding a bit like the title of an episode of The Naked Gun).
Good news then for those who enjoyed Bud’s evolution from button-down shirts and plain suits to striped ‘Gekko shirts’ and red braces. Of course Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko pioneered his namesake shirt, but Bud was aping the infamous embezzler all the way.
No plot details yet on Sheen’s role in this long awaited follow up to the 1987 Oscar winning hit. It is only a cameo part though, so maybe Gekko (newly released from prison for insider trading) tracks down Bud to apologise for his actions? Assuming this is the now reformed character we are all meant to believe in however, and not just a ruse to throw us off the scent.
Wall Street 2 has the same costume designer as the original, Ellen Mirojnick. However we are unlikely to see the return of those aforementioned contrast collars and cuffs Gekko shirts. Apparently brokers are trying to creep under the radar these days; in London even going so far as to drop the traditional bankers’ pinstripe suit.
Odds are new recruit to Wall Street Shia LaBeouf will eschew the lairy eighties look. Instead perhaps a black Paul Smith three-piece or Prada DB? Even a leather jacket or muted off-duty knitwear à la Tom Cruise in the latter half of Cocktail (also costumed by Mirojnick). Stone has waited until the current economic climate to make this film so an upsurge in sartorial seriousness would doubtlessly not escaped him.
Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps is released 8th October.
