Rush Trailer: Olivia Wilde Looks Sensational in 70's Costume | Clothes on Film
It has been a couple of weeks since this trailer surfaced, but having missed it then we feel it’s worth a post now. For anyone remotely interested in period costume, Rush looks to be something of a seventies-fest. Rush (directed by Ron Howard) tells the true story of Formula One drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) focusing on their intense and dangerous track rivalry. It is set in 1976 and features a wardrobe of era favourites such as fur trimmed coats and head-scarves for Olivia Wilde as model Suzy Miller and ringer tees for Hemsworth. Wilde does look incredible in this period, her hair and make-up…

The Lone Ranger: Never take off the Mask | Clothes on Film
MINOR SPOILERS ‘Who is behind the mask, the observer or the wearer?’ a question posed by milliner Stephen Jones, who created a series of masks inspired by The Lone Ranger to tie-in with the film’s release. It is an interesting idea, that we are hidden from view in a mask yet paradoxically more visible than ever. No-one knows for sure where masks came from. We can trace their existence back to man’s earliest ancestors, but for what purpose? Entertainment? Disguise? Protection? In cinema the mask has become visual shorthand for the hero, or more accurately the superhero. The Lone Ranger spins this notion on its head somewhat, because although the…

To Catch a Thief: Grace Kelly in Blue Chiffon | Clothes on Film
As spoilt yet charming Frances Stevens, Grace Kelly wears a total of ten separate costumes in Alfred Hitchcock’s lavish romantic caper To Catch a Thief (1954). All outfits were designed by easily the most famous costume designer who ever lived, Edith Head. Typical for Head, Frances’ outfits are a mix of steady, daring and occasionally bizarre, including a pale yellow one-piece swimsuit with ‘cats eye’ sunglasses, an unflattering blue tunic trouser suit and wild 18th century gold lamé gown with piled up sausage curls wig. For our coverage, three of the more interesting ensembles have been chosen, each reflecting a facet of Frances’ personality and in some way informing the…

Coming to America: Prints & Turbans in Contemporary Fashion | Clothes on Film
Spring. It’s long overdue and so is spring fashion. While winter clothes inspired by trends of 2010 fall collections are still prevalent, stores are piling up with spring lines that were on runways during September. Two attention grabbing trends in women’s fashion this upcoming season are prints and turbans, empathised in hit 1988 comedy Coming to America (directed by John Landis). U.S. Vogue currently features seven designers with their 2011 Spring/Summer Ready-to-Wear collections, referring to them as the “American All-Stars” of New York fashion in a spread entitled ‘Gangs of New York’. Rodarte, by Kate and Laura Mulleavey, who have made Vogue’s top ten season after season, are among the…
