Erin Benach | Clothes on Film

Contributor Birdie McAra explores the fantabulously non-male gazey world of Birds of Prey. MINOR SPOILERS For all the inevitable chrysalis transformation of singer Ally (Lady Gaga) during A Star is Born (2018, directed by Bradley Cooper), the most subtle, yet real sartorial reflection of character belongs to her mentor and lover Jack (Cooper). Costumed by Erin Benach (Drive, A Place Beyond the Pines), Jack is the epitome of the casual rock star. Stage wear, day wear, evening wear, drinking wear, sleeping wear – it’s all the same. His simple clothes mask a mind so damaged it can only be subdued with the bottle. Jack lives in t-shirts (plain, dark or…

Christian Dior | Clothes on Film

Twenty-five years ago, costume designer Margot Wilson was a student living in Paris when she picked up a roll of red, moire silk fabric during a shopping trip to Milan. When it was time to go home, she took the beautiful roll of fabric back down under with her. Fast forward three decades and a couple of dozen films later (including Lantana, Bran Nue Dae and Lawless), and Wilson has finally found a screen role for her magnificent weave –……

Fred Williamson as Tommy Gibbs adopts the gangster codes of 1930s cinema in blaxploitation classic Black Caesar. Potiche confirms that Catherine Deneuve will always be Belle de Jour, only now with added sense of humour. A classy, very British affair. Looking so sexy that the finished film can be nothing but a huge disappointment, this teaser for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy ticks all the right 70’s boxes. Kurt Swanson | Clothes on Film

Here is a brief extract from editor Chris Laverty’s third ‘Fabric of Cinema’ column for international periodical Arts Illustrated. The main reason for a plug is the subject matter discussed: colour, without doubt one of the most fascinating aspects of theoretical costume study. Colour is so open to interpretation that any occasion costume designers dare to use it with intentional meaning constitutes a brave move. One of the finest costume events of the year so far, Stoker, provides just such an example. Costumers Kurt and Bart deliberately incorporated colour as a form of expression to be read alongside the film’s similarly intentional production design. A preview of the Arts Illustrated……

Mary Quant | Clothes on Film

Our thoughts on the costume design in the season 6 premiere of Mad Men. As a preamble for Kristin Burke’s upcoming analysis of Rosemary’s Baby, here is a rather interesting chat we had about the film. Anthea Sylbert was prolific following Rosemary’s Baby. Roman Polanski’s atmospheric horror was essentially her big break – and one of her toughest challenges too. Names such as Paco Rabanne, Mary Quant, André Courrèges and Tuffin and Foale all contributed to Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe. Rosemary’s Baby is the perfect mid-sixties set fashion movie.
