The Bloody Sartorialist: Christian Bale in American Psycho | Clothes on Film
American Psycho (2000, costume designer Isis Mussenden) is a late 1980s set film that highlights the importance placed on external appearance and the disparity that can lie between this and the true nature of a person. The ‘Psycho’ of the title, Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale) is outwardly flawless. He has an extreme and involved personal beauty regime, consisting of special shampoos, body washes, face masks and scrubs, complemented by a strict diet and exercise plan that he completes daily and without fail. He believes in looking after himself – or at least his external self. Beneath this perfectly glossy exterior is emptiness – a lack of humanity, of…

Hanna: Interview with Costume Designer Lucie Bates | Clothes on Film – Part 21859
Director Joe Wright’s follow up to The Soloist (2009) is an eclectic action thriller featuring Saoirse Ronan as a sixteen year old trained killer searching for answers about her past. Costume design by German born Lucie Bates is among some of the most fascinating of the year so far. Constructed as a live action fairytale, her ensembles actually form part of the narrative. Characters are identified, even enhanced, by what they wear. Saoirse Ronan as Hanna. Her costumes are deliberately loose and not intended as gender specific. Talking exclusively to Clothes on Film, Lucie Bates chats about her work on Hanna, inducing parody, subtext and working with Giorgio Armani: Clothes…

Review: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy | Clothes on Film – Part 21747
Directed By: Tomas Alfredson Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy arrives under considerable weight of expectation, and justifiably so with such a cast. It is impossible not to compare director Tomas Alfredson’s movie to the masterful 1978 TV version starring Alec Guinness as softly spoken spy hunter George Smiley. Is Gary Oldman a more memorable Smiley? Possibly. Is this a better adaptation? No. Is the movie more entertaining? Resoundingly, yes. Tom Hardy as the film’s only real ‘action’ agent Ricki Tarr. His style, straight leg jeans, Harrington and sheepskin jacket, was directly inspired by Steve McQueen. However, entertaining does not necessarily mean more penetrable or…

Gore Verbinski Leaves Steampunk World of BioShock… | Clothes on Film
…However, he will retain a producer’s credit through his company Blind Wink. Gore Verbinski was contractually obliged to leave the project after BioShock changed filming locations in order to curb escalating costs. He is currently directing animated feature Rango for Paramount. Developed by 2K Boston/2K Australia, BioShock is an immersive first person shooter set inside the underwater city of rapture – a dreamy utopian Eden turned blood-soaked nightmare though the abuse of genre-altering plasmids mined via the sea bed. Set in 1960, the game blends a mixture of design influences spanning the 1930s to 1950s’ Art Deco revival and the neo-Victorianism of Steampunk. By rights BioShock should lend itself more…

Review: Jane Eyre at Haddon Hall | Clothes on Film – Part 22040
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench Directed By: Cary Fukunaga Clothes on Film were lucky enough to be invited to a special screening by Volkswagen See Film Differently of Jane Eyre (2011) at Haddon Hall, where much of the movie was shot doubling for Thornfield Hall in the novel. It is an extraordinary location framing a contently methodical love story. This is the beauty of Jane Eyre; conflict lies foremost with the central characters; the complex emotions which drive them. Costume design by Michael O’Connor, Oscar winner for The Duchess in 2008 provides an impeccable gloss on the film. Characteristic of gothic Victorian dress circa 1840, no longer romantic…
