Kenneth Branagh | Clothes on Film
A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has dropped and it’s undoubtedly going to be the best film EVER. Clothes on Film were fortunate enough to be invited to a display of costumes from the latest adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (2017), plus interview its costume designer Alexandra Byrne. An Oscar winner for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2008), and well known for her period design work, since 2011 Byrne has become connected to the world of Marvel, her most recent project being Doctor Strange in 2016. Here she chats candidly about recreating the (mainly) glamorous side of the early 1930s and the challenges that faced her and her…

First Official Gatsby Pics Bring the Money | Clothes on Film
Warner Bros. have released two official images from director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Not much to see as yet, but it is difficult not to be drawn in by the promise of costume luxury. Several on-set pics for The Great Gatsby have already appeared on the internet, but we shall ignore those as seeing Catherine Martin’s costumes out of context makes it difficult to judge her intentions. Plus, who wants to agitate Warner Bros. at Christmas? Not us. What we can make out from these official images is that opulence is a key factor in selling the film. It has already been reported that Tiffany &…

Anchorman 2 Trailer: Ron and Friends Meet the 80's | Clothes on Film
The first trailer for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. This looks to take the story in a fun direction with newscaster Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and friends having disappeared as legend since 1970s San Diego now reassembled in 1980s New York. Before you can say ‘curly perm’ and ‘bouclé’, Ron is sporting a graph paper check suit and fur trim leather coat. Costume designer Susan Matheson (Step Brothers, Jack Reacher) has pulled out all the stops here. With a returning ensemble that includes Brick (Steve Carrell), Brian (Paul Rudd) and Champ (David Koechner) initially more than a little seventies dated (especially Brian who is rocking the badmutha undercover cop vibe),…

Noomi Rapace in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo | Clothes on Film
Playing computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, Noomi Rapace embodies the character in such a exhaustive way that picturing anyone else in the role was, until recently, impossible. Defined by copious piercings, a ragged biker leather jacket and skinny jeans, Lisbeth is a blatant symbol of unconformity. From author Stieg Larsson’s creation to costume designer Cilla Rörby’s interpretation for the screen, Lisbeth harks back to the mid-1970s; the early days of punk and a desire to skew superficial expectations. Lisbeth’s costume changes for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009, directed by Niels Arden Oplev) are faithful, certainly in spirit, to Larsson’s Millennium novels. The overall shock factor has been toned down…

Prada | Clothes on Film
Marina Roberti is the costume designer of the Italian box office hit Sole a Catinelle. She has worked in the US with the likes of Milena Canonero, Sandy Powell and Dante Ferretti… How did you become a costume designer? When I was a kid I was a bumbler at school. I spent all the time drawing and reading. My parents were kind of worried so they decided to enroll me at a fashion college in Turin, my home town. During my last school year they took us to Rome to visit the National Film School. Next year I decided to try and join the school. I thought I could never……

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – Full Trailer Online | Clothes on Film
Shia LaBeouf runs about in a short leather jacket while Michael Douglas dons the coolest pair of retro shades for, well, this year at least. Welcome to the full international trailer for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Show me the money trailer HERE This flushes out the previous teaser in greater detail. Now we get a proper idea of the story (Douglas’ Gekko reformed, but not to be trusted) and more glimpses of Carey Mulligan in action as Gekko’s discontented daughter (may have something to do with the actress’ recent Oscar nod). Costume design by Ellen Mirojnick. Directed by Oliver Stone as sequel to his own influential eighties hit Wall…

Clothes from 2000-10 | Clothes on Film – Part 2
We have it on good authority that Black Swan is ‘spectacular’ so here are some striking images to get you in ‘that place’. Costume designer Mari-An Ceo talks about the re-design of Freddy Kruger’s iconic striped sweater for a Nightmare on Elm Street 2010. A brand new international trailer for Burlesque has pranced onto the internet. Though George Clooney is excellent, The American fails to hit the emotional notes expected. The first trailer for The Tourist has debuted. Regardless of your sexual orientation, there is something for you here. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick talks exclusively to Clothes on Film about the look of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. A few…

Full Alice in Wonderland Trailer Hits: Potty But Pretty | Clothes on Film
A fully long and weird trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has landed in cyberspace. The costumes are magnifico. Check out the HQ trailer HERE Rather than kick Lewis Carroll’s famous novel off from scratch, Tim Burton has chosen to return Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) to Wonderland after a hopeless marriage proposal. Judging by this trailer, Burton’s Wonderland will be a place of colourful vistas, colourful characters and with Johnny Depp’s bright orange Mad Hatter barnet, colourful hair. A lot of colour then, basically. The costumes by Burton regular Colleen Atwood (Big Fish, The Silence of the Lambs) are awe-inspiring. Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen is…

Illuminate More Than Hide: Costume Design in A Separation | Clothes on Film – Part 25735
Kelsey Osgood examines the religious and cultural significance of costume design in 2012 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, A Separation (directed by Asghar Farhadi). Perhaps for many observers, particularly those who live in liberal Western cultures, the concept of Arab and Persian religious uniform is symbolised by the simplicity of the black burqa. The pious pare down their clothing to the least colourful and individualizing garments in order to humble themselves before their God. As generally decreed by feminist scholars, women in religiously observant societies are those most affected by sartorial limits. But like most practices viewed as wholly restrictive, the rules of modest dress for religious women…
