dogtooth check | Clothes on Film
When Clothes on Film visited The Muppets Most Wanted set back in March of 2013, we were given a tour of the bustling ‘wardrobe’ (their words) department, as overseen by costume designer Rahel Afiley. You can read more about that HERE, but after chasing Ms. Afiley around the room while she was trying to work, we managed to get a bit more out of her about using designer fashion, i.e. Vivienne Westwood, in the film. As always we are pushing the same old costume/fashion debate, though in this instance hearing from a costume designer on the front line is rather enlightening. Focusing specifically on Miss Piggy, for she is the…

Sleepy Hollow | Clothes on Film
It was late November, 2016 when I visited the set of The Conjuring 2 (directed by James Wan). The reason I never wrote about it for Clothes on Film or anywhere else was because of my official role on the day: I was playing an extra (or background artist if you like) during the film’s Maida Vale pub scene. Specifically this is the moment when real life husband and wife paranormal investigator team, Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) meet with noted experts in their field to discuss the validity of their current case, aka the Enfield poltergeist. I made the finished cut, by the skin of my……

When Arnold Scaasi opened his couture salon in 1964, he soon became a couturier to the stars. He was already a favoured designer for Barbra Streisand when he famously dressed her for the 1969 Oscars. Streisand was up for Best Actress for her movie debut in Funny Girl and was established as something of an ‘individual’; usually described as ‘kooky’, she was completely different from anyone else, an innovator of style, and challenging and changing the ideas of beauty. So it is no surprise that when it came to her clothing choice for the Oscars, Streisand resisted the usual protocol of an evening gown and instead opted for a most……

Of Money and Sex: Fitzgerald, Luhrmann, and Clothing in The Great Gatsby | Clothes on Film
Hating Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will be easy. Every intermediate reader has read it and loves it and wants to protect it. I’ve read it dozens of times and devoted nearly 20 years to writing about Fitzgerald, his characters, and their clothing. I’ve long imagined Gatsby’s closet, Daisy’s pearls, and Jordan’s knitwear. I know what they look like to me. What I want to know is: “What do they look like to Baz Luhrmann and costume designer, Catherine Martin?” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s text goes hand-in-glove with visual interpretation: mascara-laden flappers sobbing as the party ends; a lilac tricorn hat tipped just the right way so you can’t see her…
