Janie Bryant Talks Mad Men Season 4: “Glitzy, not so glitzy”

Stylelist.com are running this exclusive interview with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant as she hints at what costumes to expect in season four. It is largely a puff piece; light on details, but still a fascinating glance at how Bryant’s busy sixties-shaped mind works.

Following John Dunn’s defining work for the pilot back in 2007; Janie Bryant’s costumes on Mad Men have sparked a high street revival of late 1950s-60’s era fashion for both sexes. Apparently there is even a Don ‘Draper grey’ suit on the market now, not to mention the upsurge in short, stretchy wiggle dresses à la Joan Holloway. With season four of this justifiably popular show on the way, Bryant’s vintage influence shows no signs of abating.

According to this clip, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) will be in darker colours to reflect certain changes in his life; Betty (January Jones), still the “idea of perfection” according to Bryant, will edge further towards Jackie Onassis; Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) continues to become more individual; Joan (Christina Hendricks), a woman who “knows her shape” will maintain this look, but Bryant is adding some “no hanger appeal” items set to jump to life on Hendricks’ curves. Keep watch too for younger styles that creep in amongst those nipped-in jackets and grey marl suits.

This is a very New York sixties vibe, literally miles from the youthquake explosion that was occurring in London. Though this might be why we love Mad Men, it is more classy than trendy.
