UK film review of Terminator Salvation | Clothes on Film
Starring: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood Directed by: McG The terminator, as represented first and best by Arnold Schwarzenegger, is an obvious signifier for brutish masculinity on film: black leather biker jacket, muscular build, modest dialogue. The irony being, of course, that he is a machine. In Terminator Salvation (2009) this iconic manifestation stays in place, but the clothes and actor change. Not for the first time this has occurred (Schwarzenegger isn’t the only actor to play a terminator after all), but in this film his replacement looks more or less the same. After the slim-framed T-1000 (Robert Patrick) and the female-framed T-X (Kristanna Loken), it is a back…

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Teaser Trailer Hits | Clothes on Film
We had a seemingly endless parade of character portraits revealed in early March, but now here is the first actual trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with actual footage and everything. Surprisingly, it is not centred on the more glamorous side of Catching Fire, i.e. the sensational Capitol outfits. Instead we stay dark and dirty with Games contestants Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and previous winner Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) visiting the poverty ravaged districts. There are lots of Nehru and ‘granddad’ collars, linen, leather and heavy cotton fabrics, and just a hint of Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) tottering into view wearing two fluffy Capitol gowns.…

Tron Legacy: Light Suit Costume – Part 2 | Clothes on Film – Part 15853
Part 2 of our detailed look at the costumes in Tron Legacy. After examining the overall creation and construction of the light suits, we have now moved onto specific design elements for individual characters. Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn The only son of Kevin Flynn, Sam is 27 years old, daredevil, rebellious and haunted by the unexplained disappearance of his father. He is sucked into the Grid while following up a mysterious message apparently sent from inside his father’s old video games arcade. Hedlund’s primary costume is a disc game suit. It was far and away the most difficult for associate costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark and her team to…

Thea Porter | Clothes on Film
SPOILERS THROUGHOUT Having recently finished a six week, six episode run on the BBC, John le Carré adapted spy drama The Little Drummer Girl was divisive in terms of audience reaction. Some found the plot impossible to follow, others revelled in the cloak and dagger shenanigans of twenty-something Charmain ‘Charlie’ Ross (Florence Pugh), a low level actress drawn into a high stakes mission of infiltrating a Palestinian revolutionary group in 1979. The show’s costume design by Sheena Napier and Stephen Noble inspired equal division. While most enjoyed the eye-popping period ensembles and how they exemplified character, just as many were left confounded by their conspicuous presence. One thing that cannot……

Jacqueline Durran | Clothes on Film
There are already a lot of excellent interviews with Oscar winning Beauty and the Beast costume designer Jacqueline Durran online, so with our limited communication we wanted to ask a little more about Belle’s (Emma Watson) day-to-day ensemble and the creation of Gaston’s attire (Luke Evans), arguably the closest character to his 1991 animated counterpart. Ms. Durran, currently hard at work on a new project, was kind enough to provide a few brief responses: Clothes on Film: How did you go about creating costumes for a computer generated Beast? Jacqueline Durran: When I first started prep on the movie the Beast was going to be a prosthetic beast. Had this……

superhero | Clothes on Film
There is not man behind the mask; the mask is The Lone Ranger. Superman’s new costume is underwear with a cape. Spoiler warning: We examine the use of suits, iron or otherwise, in Iron Man 3 to conceal and recreate identity. It is impossible not to have fun watching Avengers Assemble. By no means intended as an exhaustive list, Clothes on Film ponder an overview of 2011 in costume. Here are some new character posters for Kick-Ass. Peppy costume design by Sammy Sheldon.

Be the Stylish Man at Cannes: Tips From the Movies | Clothes on Film
Jacques D’Azur is missing. So what are you going to do about it? Take his place, that’s what. Here are some tips from the flicks on how to succeed that sultan of sophistication. Sans Tie: First things first, ditch the tie. It’s Cannes, it’s sunny, and you need to breathe. Try following the late, great Cary Grant’s example and wear a scarf instead. Playing cat burglar John Robie in To Catch a Thief (1955), Grant added a spotted red silk scarf to his matelot top and grey slacks ensemble after scouring boutiques along the Riviera. You won’t look as good as him, but at least they won’t send you off…

January Jones | Clothes on Film
Our thoughts on the costume design in the season 6 premiere of Mad Men. The period is swinging, but the trailer is classy. Some official images have surfaced for X-Men: First Class. The sixties costumes vibe is not excessive, however. Following a trip to Rome, Betty dons the latest in European chic – a colourful maxi dress that belongs in sleepy Ossining just about as much as she does. A hint at what costume designer Janie Bryant has in store for Mad Men season four.

Review: Skyfall | Clothes on Film
Starring: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem Directed By: Sam Mendes SPOILER FREE James Bond thunders back to our screens in what feels like a reboot of the 50 year old franchise with the same actor. This is not the 007 who calmly waits for a man to bleed to death before stealing his Harrington; the brutal cold bastard of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace has mellowed considerably and can even manage a quip or two. Whether this development will delight or disappoint is a matter of personal taste. One thing is certain however; Bond has never scrubbed up better. Tom Ford now exists to make Daniel Craig suits.…
