Video: The Tudors – Exclusive Interview with Joan Bergin | Clothes on Film
Clothes on Film talk exclusively to Emmy award winning costume designer Joan Bergin about her extraordinary work on The Tudors, discussing codpieces, modern day fashion influences, nipples and more. It’s video so you won’t even need your reading glasses. The Tudors, or Dynasty with ruffs if you will, is a four season period drama series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII, perhaps England’s most eligible monarch in history (on paper at least). His stunning clothes of silk brocade and leather were made by costume designer Joan Bergin (The Prestige). The sheer scale of the project was incredible, with cast of 110 and countless extras requiring, in Joan’s own…

Flashdance | Clothes on Film
Surely we all know Michael Kaplan by now? Flashdance (1983), Fight Club (1999), Burlesque (2010), Star Trek (2009), and the biggest of the big, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Versatile is not a generous enough word for his talent; he is literally one of the best in the business, as his CDG (Costume Designers Guild) nomination for Star Wars goes some way to proving. I spoke to Mr Kaplan just after Christmas about his work for The Force Awakens, but due to unforeseen circumstances (basically Clothes on Film HQ flooding), this interview is only being posted now. Still much to enjoy though, and plenty of costume titbits to sift through.…

Review: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy | Clothes on Film
Directed By: Tomas Alfredson Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy arrives under considerable weight of expectation, and justifiably so with such a cast. It is impossible not to compare director Tomas Alfredson’s movie to the masterful 1978 TV version starring Alec Guinness as softly spoken spy hunter George Smiley. Is Gary Oldman a more memorable Smiley? Possibly. Is this a better adaptation? No. Is the movie more entertaining? Resoundingly, yes. Tom Hardy as the film’s only real ‘action’ agent Ricki Tarr. His style, straight leg jeans, Harrington and sheepskin jacket, was directly inspired by Steve McQueen. However, entertaining does not necessarily mean more penetrable or…

Kick-Ass Character Posters: Costumed Superfreaks | Clothes on Film
Here are some new character posters for Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming Kick-Ass. If you do not yet care about the film, you may as well jump on board right now. It will be all over the place in a few weeks and you’ll need an opinion. Peppy costume design by Sammy Sheldon. Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) wears an outfit made from real French police riot equipment. He may look daft, not to mention just like another superhero in yellow and black with a chest plate, but laugh at him at your peril. Don’t let the pink belt and plaid skirt fool you. Look closer at the poster image and you will…
