New Salt Trailer: Your Recommended Intake of Jolie | Clothes on Film
Trailer No.2 for Angelina Jolie’s punch, leap and run espionage thriller Salt has arrived. She is staggeringly beautiful, as always, yet her character is definitely of the look but don’t touch variety. Costume design by Sarah Edwards. You’ll want that coat.
Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent wrongly accused of being a KGB spy (are we back in the eighties?!) and forced to go on the run, while sporting a wicked black fringe and smacking people hard in order to clear her name. The film is directed by Philip Noyce (Clear and Present Danger, The Quiet American), and it is good to see in the big leagues again.
Sarah Edwards is comparatively new to costume design (say, to someone like Janty Yates). Yet a quick glance over Edwards’ credits reveals Michael Clayton and wonderful Ricky Gervais comedy Ghost Town.
Unassuming costumes in both, maybe, but with Ghost Town (2008) in particular, impeccably used to express personality and impinge upon the narrative (you can read more about our thoughts on that movie HERE). Costume design is more than just cute frocks and sharp shirts, above all else it exists to visualise character.
That does not mean that a certain gloss is unacceptable, however, especially in a high gloss thriller such as Salt. The monochrome clothes, mainly layered black, along with Jolie’s thick eyeliner, evoke a sixties air. There is no attempt to hide the ridiculous in this trailer either, but if anyone can make Salt a convincing watch, Jolie can.
Right or wrong, it seems Angelina Jolie is the savior of women’s action cinema in Hollywood at the moment. After being the best thing in Wanted, it is about time she received due props for her efforts. Will Salt do for Jolie what The Bourne Identity did for Matt Damon? We certainly, certainly hope so.
Salt is released on 23rd July in the U.S. and 20th August in the UK.
