historical | Clothes on Film
The biggest compliment that can be paid to Joanna Johnston’s costumes in Lincoln is that you will hardly notice them. Unquestionably the most historically significant outfit Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy wears in the show is her rose pink tweed suit. More clip than teaser trailer, but Meryl Streep certainly does look the part. Penny Rose creates incredible costume that feels so much like it belongs; ironically we barely even notice it’s there. To coincide with Emily Blunt’s Golden Globe nomination for The Young Victoria, here is a revealing interview with the film’s costume designer Sandy Powell.

Halston | Clothes on Film
MILD SPOILERS Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) is far and away the most ‘A New Hope-like’ film in the series yet. In terms of tone, sure, but particularly costume. What costume designers Glyn Dillon and David Crossman have so expertly achieved with Solo is making a contemporary looking movie set during the late 1960s. Star Wars: A New Hope was released in 1977 which puts Solo’s timeline around a decade before, or likely just over. But hang on, isn’t this a science fiction movie? What does when it’s made have to do with the space opera world being brought to life on screen? Well the seventies in particular was……

Chalky White | Clothes on Film
This is a personal post about designing my custom made James Bond shirt. It is not an advertorial and wasn’t paid for. All photographs are of the final finished shirt(s) and taken by David Wade of Vogue Shot photography. There are now ample custom shirt makers online, but as a pre-existing customer of Deo Veritas what made this company stand out for me was a steadfast, almost stubborn desire to get everything ‘just so’. Seemingly no query or request is too much trouble. Bearing this in mind I tasked Deo Veritas with recreating a shirt I have always sought yet been unable to find off the peg or in my……

UK Film Review: The Road | Clothes on Film
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall Directed by: John Hillcoat Viggo Mortensen stars as ‘Man’ in director John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s unfilmable novel The Road; proving that it is filmable, if not exactly fun. The Road (2009) is about as miserable a Hollywood film as you are likely to see. Watching it is like dying for two hours. It is pegged as a journey for survival, yet as the story offers no possibility of this, life becomes merely a reprieve. If such wretchedness does not put you off however, a rewarding passage awaits; to vicariously experience what you hope to god you will never have to face…

Ridley Scott | Clothes on Film
For a big budget movie about a lone astronaut who gets stranded on Mars, the spacesuits in The Martian are surprisingly sober in terms of design. There is an attempt here to make everything seem as plausible as possible, costume design especially. Director Ridley Scott’s regular costumer Janty Yates has created possibly the sexiest spacesuits ever seen on screen, and what’s more they are functional. To paraphrase a line in the film, she had to “science the shit out of them”. Yates collaborated with NASA looking specifically at their Z1 and Z2 prototypes to create an EVA (‘Extravehicular Activity’ – any time the crew must go outside) suit and surface……
