Internal Affairs: A Black and White World | Clothes on Film

Internal Affairs (1990) is an excellent stone cold thriller. The costumes are a subtle tease, revealing personal information that the characters never say out loud. Like many movies released in the late 1980s/1990s, Internal Affairs radiates uneasiness caused by shifting societal attitudes – anything that threatens a straight male chauvinist black-and-white world. Costume designer Rudy Dillon punches through this black-and-white world with ensembles that poke fun at the status quo and subsequently subvert them with eroticism, perhaps ironically using only a colour scheme of black and white. Andy Garcia as Raymond Avilla and Richard Gere as Officer Dennis Peck: the suit and the uniform. Dennis with Van Stretch (William Baldwin)…

New Public Enemies Posters Released | Clothes on Film

Public Enemies, the upcoming Michael Mann directed crime thriller starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, has just updated its marketing campaign with three new poster designs HERE. Telling the story of infamous 1930s Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) and FBI agent Melvin Purvis’ (Christian Bale) efforts to bring him to justice, Public Enemies is certainly not a fashion movie in the traditional sense. Though judging by the pin-sharp HD trailer and these lavishly realised one-sheets, it is set to be a sumptuous period piece in terms of costume design. For the thirties gangster look we should expect larger-than-life trends of the day: wider suit lapels, wider trousers,…

Contributor | Clothes on Film – Part 3

Bonnie and Clyde is a great example of how the simple addition of a hat can say a lot about a character. Anna May Wong fused East and West against an ill-equipped backdrop of Hollywood cinema. All the recurring themes in Desperately Seeking Susan are linked to one jacket. The range of Edwardian coats cut for Dennis Price are recreated with remarkable historical accuracy.

Iron Man 2 Fan Costume: Fan-tastic | Clothes on Film

Making that significant leap from dressing up Fridays to full-blown fan built replica, Anthony Le’s War Machine suit is a sight to behold. Wired and Geektyrant have lots more photographs of this incredible costume, so do head over there in just a minute. Anthony Le built his War Machine (based on Don Cheadle’s outfit in Iron Man 2) from high-impact urethane held together with around 1,500 rivets. The helmet is moulded from a clay and liquid resin. Miniature servos operate the faceplate and a rotary gun turret crafted from pipes; LEDs are imbedded in the chest plate. It took a month to construct and cost $4,000. When not scaring his…

The Alienist: Featurette Provides Glimpse into Gilded Style | Clothes on Film

Netflix have released a short featurette about costume design for The Alienist, giving an overall glimpse at the work of Michael Kaplan and his team in putting together the era of 1896, New York. What is enticing about The Alienist, apart from the fact that it’s brilliant whodunit telly, is that it is set outside of England, which is so often the preserve of dramas such as these. This is NY style at a point in history when those with money were about to get a whole lot more. Expensive, in other words, and if you had deep enough pockets your taste in fashion would echo this. Check out the…
