It’s grim by the coast. A trailer for 1960s set Brighton Rock has arrived online. Though George Clooney is excellent, The American fails to hit the emotional notes expected. MINOR SPOILERS There are already lots of good interviews with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) costume designer Michael Kaplan on the internet (we recommend this one in particular), so for Clothes on Film we kept it brief and fresh. We caught up with Kaplan, who is also responsible for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Trek (2009), Fight Club (1999) and Blade Runner (1982), for a little chat about what’s new for episode 8 of the ever evolving space saga. Chances are you have not seen Snowpiercer yet due to its limited availability and release fiasco. If so, skip this interview and watch the film first. Go in clean, because Snowpiercer really is as good as everyone’s telling you. Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, it is essentially a dark (often literally) sci-fi thriller about a perpetual motion train carrying the last remnants of society after a global ice age. Themes of cruelty, disparity and sacrifice abound, and strong, sometimes horrific visual references bombard the screen. The exceptional costume design by Catherine George ties all this together in a way that is readable and indicative, yet never threatens……

Stone slacks, leather cardigan, pale denim – who wouldn’t want to dress like Alan Partridge? This may be dad brand clothing, but it announces you as the most confident man in the room. Driving gloves? That’s nothing. Try removing your coat and jacket then leaving the driving gloves until last. That takes guts, or failing that a complete lack of personal awareness. In other words it takes a Partridge. Steve Coogan co-created and has played sports-journalist-turned-chat-show-host-turned-DJ Alan Partridge on and off for 22 years. Nothing his character wears is random. For costume designer Julian Day (Berberian Sound Studio, Rush), working alongside perfectionist Coogan on Alpha Papa must have been a……

Bonnie and Clyde is a great example of how the simple addition of a hat can say a lot about a character. Old fashioned and sentimental, Water for Elephants still has much to offer with its very readable costume design. Some images and the latest trailer from Water for Elephants. Period costume design by Jacqueline West. The most memorable musical number ever captured on film, and Ginger Rogers’ dress contributes to this greatly. A boisterous facade of rose-tinted Hollywood nostalgia. Public Enemies wears it well.

The latest book by fashion historian, and now TV presenter Amber Butchart (A Stitch in Time on BBC 4 – second season please), is a comprehensively researched stroll through the best dressed folk ever to exist on the planet. The Fashion Chronicles: The Style Stories of History’s Best Dressed is laid out to be effortlessly readable, split into sections ranging from Ancient (and we mean ancient; basically like the first clothes ever) to 20th and 21st Century. Each entry gets a couple of pages of engaging historical notes and background justifying their inclusion along with a photo / picture or two. It works; it doesn’t feel like study or revision,……

Curzon on Demand: Films and Costumes on the Go | Clothes on Film

With so many movie streaming options now cropping up, we thought it would be worth drawing your attention to one of the best: Curzon on Demand. Our main reason for the love being that Curzon focus predominately on often neglected art-house cinema, plus their films are available to stream from the moment they are released at the cinema. The In Cinemas – On Curzon catalogue is pleasingly diverse, particularly from a costume point of view. Incorporating period features such as Wuthering Heights (2011), The Young Victoria (2009) and Peter Greenaway’s classic The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982), to the subtextual delights of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and Melancholia (2011).…
