Alexander McQueen: Found Dead in London | Clothes on Film
Fashion’s original bad boy Alexander McQueen has died aged just 40 years old. We will keep to the facts as they are known at this time and report that McQueen was found dead in his London home just after 10 am, Thursday 11th February. From The Guardian, UK: “A post-mortem has been scheduled but police said his death was not being treated as suspicious. They would not comment on reports he had killed himself.” Formerly an apprentice on Savile Row, son of a taxi driver Alexander McQueen was well known for his performance art style shows and fashion extremism that precipitated a new age of futurist design in the naughties.…

Michael Shannon | Clothes on Film
SPOILERS THROUGHOUT Having recently finished a six week, six episode run on the BBC, John le Carré adapted spy drama The Little Drummer Girl was divisive in terms of audience reaction. Some found the plot impossible to follow, others revelled in the cloak and dagger shenanigans of twenty-something Charmain ‘Charlie’ Ross (Florence Pugh), a low level actress drawn into a high stakes mission of infiltrating a Palestinian revolutionary group in 1979. The show’s costume design by Sheena Napier and Stephen Noble inspired equal division. While most enjoyed the eye-popping period ensembles and how they exemplified character, just as many were left confounded by their conspicuous presence. One thing that cannot……

Christmas comes early for anyone looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises, as Warner Bros. has just released a full trailer. Blurry and unofficial, but these are definitely photos of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Somewhat misleading as nowhere is this…

An Education Trailer Hits: Sophisticated Sixties Fashion | Clothes on Film
WATCH THE NEW TRAILER An Education is an upcoming early 1960s set film about Jenny (Carey Mulligan) a bright seventeen year old planning to study at Oxford who becomes romantically involved with dashing socialite David (Peter Sarsgaard), soon abandoning her aspirations and future shot at independence. The story is an adaptation of British journalist Lynn Barber’s autobiography of the same name. Judging solely on this footage, Jenny goes down the Audrey Hepburn route more than typical teen fashions of the sixties; so a Givenchy pared-down style comprising little jewellery, trenchcoat, simple, sexy shifts in silk and plain colours with occasional floral prints rather than the younger look of Courtelle mini-dresses…

MINOR SPOILERS First Man (2018) is not a movie overly preoccupied with fashion, And why would it be? The focus of the story is astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and his journey to become the first person to ever walk on the surface of the moon. Armstrong wears a lot of button down shirts, short sleeve checks, neutral slacks, the odd dark single breasted suit for formal occasions – largely dour attire for a dour man. He also wears a space suit, several of them. However, outside of Emilio Pucci’s involvement in designing the logo for the Apollo 15 flight in 1971, fashion rarely intersects with the requirements of surviving……

World War II | Clothes on Film
Building character with the costume design of Pacific Rim. As worn by Grace Kelly, this floaty, conspicuous dress is an appreciable nod to Dior’s ‘New Look’ of the late 1940s. Carice van Houten is a Resistance beauty of Jean Harlow-esque proportions in an unmissable red halterneck dress. Empire recently spoke to Chris Evans about his Captain America: The First Avenger costume.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: Trailer Raids the Net | Clothes on Film
Here it is then, the first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Join Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he hunts for the legendary Fountain of Youth, clashing with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) and formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane). There won’t be any Orlando Bloom, but there will be zombies and mermaids, and maybe a Jolly Rodger too. To all intents and purposes this looks like more of the same, despite the presence of a fresh director – Rob Marshall replacing the original trilogy’s Gore Verbinski. Neither of these points are necessarily a cause for concern. Pirates is a lively franchise, though always works best…

Django Unchained costume designer Sharen Davis exclusively explains her work on the film. Costume designer Sharen Davis finds a good fit with Tarantino; their Deep South bounty hunter Django is a visibly memorable protagonist crying out for a sequel. Ben Affleck’s pseudo-cowboy costume in Argo harks back to the golden age of the sports jacket. Crazy, Stupid Love is every inch the ‘fashion film’, both in terms of narrative and costume designer Dayna Pink’s elegant menswear styling.

Rinko Kikuchi | Clothes on Film
Building character with the costume design of Pacific Rim. Beautiful and affecting, even if it does collapse under the weight of its own earnestness at times.
