Kristin Burke | Clothes on Film
It was late November, 2016 when I visited the set of The Conjuring 2 (directed by James Wan). The reason I never wrote about it for Clothes on Film or anywhere else was because of my official role on the day: I was playing an extra (or background artist if you like) during the film’s Maida Vale pub scene. Specifically this is the moment when real life husband and wife paranormal investigator team, Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) meet with noted experts in their field to discuss the validity of their current case, aka the Enfield poltergeist. I made the finished cut, by the skin of my……

Video: Designing James Bond's Suits: Connery to Craig | Clothes on Film – Part 26728
A new web documentary analysing the look of James Bond has been released to coincide with the Designing 007 exhibition in London. It is well worth watching as costume designer Lindy Hemming, a veteran of five Bond films, discusses her approach for both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig; essentially that Brosnan’s suits were deliberately ‘European’ and Craig’s were intended to ‘pull him in’. There are further notes from David Mason (Anthony Sinclair tailors) and Ritchie Charlton (Douglas Hayward tailors) as to why they believe Bond is still such a sartorial icon. Anthony Sinclair have recently undertaken remaking Sean Connery’s midnight tuxedo with turnback cuffs from Dr. No (1962) to display…

Film Review: Saturn 3 | Clothes on Film – Part 6793
Starring: Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel Directed by: Stanley Donen Saturn 3 (1980) is sleazy vicarious voyeurism; a harbinger for the world today; where voyeurs do not need to see first hand to obsess, they just need the technology. Kirk Douglas stars as Major Adam, a research scientist living on a huge spaceship with just one companion, his lover and assistant Alex (Farrah Fawcett). When Bensen (Harvey Keitel) murders an assigned visitor and boards the ship, he assembles a ‘demi-god’ robot named Hector and correlates the machine to function alongside his own brain. As Bensen is obsessed with possessing Alex, his robot is programmed to feel the same way.…

Behind the Scenes: Angels the Costumiers | Clothes on Film – Part 24939
A few weeks ago, Clothes on Film were invited to spend a day at Angels the costumiers. We had a private tour of their hire warehouse, watched tailors and dressmakers at work, then interviewed creative manager Jeremy Angel, son of Chairman Tim Angel about how the business is structured and their plans for future. What we discovered was illuminating. More than just a rental shop for film, theatre and television costume, Angels also provide inspiration to the fashion industry. Angels was established by Morris Angel in the Seven Dials region of London as a used clothing store in 1840, essentially selling tailors’ samples and excess stock. Soon the store relocated…

The Dressmaker | Clothes on Film
Twenty-five years ago, costume designer Margot Wilson was a student living in Paris when she picked up a roll of red, moire silk fabric during a shopping trip to Milan. She didn’t know why, or what for; she wasn’t even a costume designer then, just a talented young fashion grad from East Sydney Tech on a six-month scholarship to France. When it was time to go home, she took the beautiful roll of fabric back down under with her. Fast forward three decades and a couple of dozen films later (including Lantana, Bran Nue Dae and Lawless), and Wilson has finally found a screen role for her magnificent weave –…
