Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman Costume: Full Paparazzi Reveal

These are not great photos, well they are not official photos, but they do at least confirm that Anne Hathaway is playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and not just Selina Kyle. That is definitely a Catwoman costume. Perhaps the biggest surprise with director Christopher Nolan and costume designer Lindy Hemming’s version of the costume is thigh high leather boots with steel spike heels and wedge soles. In Nolan’s (comparatively) realistic Batman universe, these boots seem more akin to an ironic S&M club than for scaling buildings as a cat burglar. Hathaway’s long steel heels are distinctly visible. Then again, they certainly add sex appeal. Ditto the feline Alice…

3rd Fashion in Film Festival Launches

Subtitled ‘Birds of Paradise’, the third Fashion in Film Festival will take place in three London venues on 1st – 12th December. There is plenty to see and digest too, including a wealth of rare UK screenings for films such as Red Heels (Dir. Michael Curtiz, 1925) and Ziegfeld Girl (Robert Z. Leonard, 1941). The festival investigates costume in European and American film as cinematic spectacle. Specifically an analysis of theme, form, texture and colour – those movies that foreground costume as an enrichment of the viewing experience. Unashamedly analytical, there are obscure screenings, some experimental, some features; from the silent era (Orientalist) to the 1970s (conspicuous display) and incorporating…

Mad Men: Christina Hendricks' Scarf & Bag Combo (S1)

This is an effortlessly chic touch from the 1960s; the subtle way in which Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant sets Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) apart from the pack. A straightforward loosely tied scarf around the handbag and Joan is the most stylish woman in the world’s most sexist office: Black leather frame handbag with burnt orange lucite handle. Front decorative flap pocket. Gold tone frame and clasp. Silk orange, red and purple geometric print scarf knotted around the handle. The bag could be very dark green, or blue, it is difficult to tell. The quality matt finish would suggest genuine leather, maybe even pigskin. Gold tone is gold coloured…

Gucci to Block Scott Movie if it doesn’t Measure Up

Perhaps hardly surprising but it turns out Gucci are not that fussed at Ridley Scott making a film out of the most tumultuous period in their history after all. It was recently revealed that Scott had designs on Angelina Jolie to play the part of Patrizia Reggiani in his long gestating Gucci exposé (read HERE). Reggiani was married to Maurizio Gucci, grandson of the fashion giant’s founder Guccio Gucci. Following a spate of vicious in-fighting during the late 1970s-80’s, Reggiani had Maurizio murdered outside his Milan apartment in 1995. Variety is reporting that Reggiani blames Scott’s wife Giannina Facio for misleading the Gucci family into thinking his film would be…

Costume Stories: This Week, Mad Men & Behind the Candelabra

A few costume design stories you might have missed this week. The Big Wedding HELLO!’s not exactly in-depth interview with costume designer Aude-Bronson Howard is still worth a read. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Capitol Couture’s website is relaunched with its spring edition ‘Chroma Nouveau’. Apparently the focus is now on ‘high fashion’ (goodness only knows what Effie was wearing before). X-Men: Days Of Future Past Director Bryan Singer tweets a photo of Jennifer Lawrence in Mystique costume/make-up. Stoker Excellent costume analysis of Stoker. Love the Charlie notes especially. Scandal Good Q&A with Shonda Rhimes about the costumes in ABC’s political thriller series. BBC Bans Tights Costume designers get these…

Clash of The Titans Teaser Trailer Hits and Hits Hard

Just days behind our first glimpse at Prince of Persia, we have a minute or so teaser trailer for Clash of the Titans. It’s certainly loud. Watch the HD trailer HERE Frenzied, deafening, BIG scorpions and hairdo – just a few words that spring to mind upon seeing this montage. Not much chance to soak up the costumes, but the look is calculable: tunics and armour, Keffiyah headdress and kilts. Costume designer for Clash of the Titans is Welsh born Lindy Hemming. Noted for putting Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond in Brioni for GoldenEye (1995), Hemming has notched up a sizable Hollywood CV with enough blockbusters to start her own franchise.…

Of course they talked costume, and Clothes on Film have the exclusive. Deirdre Clemente: Your work on the film translated into unique partnerships. Please, Sir! Vote Clothes on Film in the Total Film Blog Awards

Clothes on Film has been nominated as Best Overall Blog in the Total Film Blog Awards 2011! Please vote for us at the link below: Being as Clothes on Film’s less than esteemed founder and editor (that’s me) is moving house this month, there will be less posts on the site than usual (sorry). That said; look out for something amazing about Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, something grumpy about ‘hippie’ Meg Ryan in Proof of Life, and possibly something Armani about Richard Gere. I run Clothes on Film and write most of the posts, but not without the help of some select, extremely knowledgeable and talented contributors. Without them…

New Tron Legacy Banners Bring the Costumes

Three international banners for Tron Legacy have just been released by Disney. The information drip feed for this film is relatively slow, but these do at least reveal some detail of the light suit costume. To be fair the Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn banner is the only new one. Here he is wearing a long twill weave coat with flared sleeves over his robe (which we must say seems entirely computer rendered in this image). Those light boots look amazing, however. Incidentally, Adidas have made some Tron inspired Stan Smiths to tie in with the movie, as well as two high-tops revealed at Comic Con in July. Unfortunately these…
